I never knew what I would walk into in the morning. I plan and teach all of the lessons from kindergarten to eighth grade. I have to make sure the building is in good repair. One of the things about school on the Island is there's no 'hot lunch.' You bring your lunch from home everyday to school. So the idea of getting a hot lunch was very exciting. And at the time there were maybe 5 kids in the island school which was a lot, and now I was going to a school with 800-100 kids, so as you can imagine my first day was pretty overwhelming, but the one thing carrying me through the day was this idea of getting hot lunch. So I'm in the hot lunch line, I have my milk and little cup of peanuts, and I see the mashed potatoes which don't look too good. The applesauce was white which was weird, I was used to homemade brown apple sauce...but I though, 'that's okay, the main course is coming up.' So I got there and when the stereotypical cafeteria lady tongs a big slab of fried baloney onto my tray. I just totally broke out in tears. I had to go to the office, I was inconsolable. The year-round population of the island is about 30, and they're not all your best friends. We don't have a medical facility. We don't have EMT's in the winter. We don't have law enforcement. We have a volunteer fire department. We have one gas pump and one kerosene pump and a small grocery store that has hours in the winter that are very short- the store is open two-three hours five days a week. It's important to always be prepared. To live out here you must be a strong person, self reliant and like yourself a lot. People think or say, 'oh you live on a beautiful island, that must be glamorous or the best life but there's more to life than beauty. We got a call about 3 in the morning, saying that the Cogan's house was on fire. Rushing I get to the house, several islanders were already there trying to star the fire truck that didn't have any water in and wouldn't start, people started running home to get garden house, it was spring and the nearby brook had water in it. They began watering down the burning house. It was pretty dark out with water running everywhere and we were slipping in mud, as well as being covered with it. Some islanders, who rarely even waved to one another but alone speak to each other at other times. Were working side by side and helping each other in any way they could. Tragic that the house burnt down. But the best of the humor spread was evident, and good to see. I doubt you would see this selflessness and comradery in many other places.
