About: This documentary tells the harrowing story of a woman trying to use Alabama's Stand Your Ground law after killing a man she says brutally attacked her.
My role: Director of Photography
In 2019, I traveled alone to Alabama to meet Brittany Smith and her mother after pitching a video piece to The New Yorker to accompany a story by Elizabeth Flock. On this first trip to Alabama, I ran three cameras, lights and the audio while interviewing Brittany and her family on the camera. I documented her the days before, during and after her Stand Your Ground hearing. After several more shoots in Alabama, I edited the short film that was published in The New Yorker. Shortly after its publication, Tripod Media picked up the story in interest of a longer form piece, using my raw footage.
